German Student Visa: A Step-by-Step Application Guide
Everything you need for your German student visa application: required documents, booking an appointment and application tips.
Applying for a German student visa is a multi-stage process that begins once you have been admitted to a university. Taking the steps in the right order and with the right documents is critical to a successful application.
1. University admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid): Apply to the program at your chosen university and keep your admission letter in both paper and digital form.
2. Blocked account (Sperrkonto): Open a blocked account holding €11,904 per year through Expatrio, Fintiba or Deutsche Bank.
3. Health insurance: Take out insurance that is valid for the duration of your application with a provider such as AOK, TK or Mawista.
4. Consulate appointment: Book an appointment through VFS Global or directly with the consulate — in some cities the wait can be 2–3 months.
5. Document file: Your passport, biometric photo, admission letter, blocked account confirmation, diploma, transcript and letter of motivation must all be complete.
Including the appointment wait, the whole process usually takes 1–3 months. Before your appointment, the Yön Group team can help you with a mock interview and a document check.
